Job Description

St. Mary’s College of Maryland at Historic St. Mary’s City is accepting résumés for the full-time temporary contingent position of Assistant Archaeologist. The Assistant Archaeologist will assist with fieldwork and laboratory processing of archaeological materials (artifacts, records) for various departmental projects. The successful candidate must have some fieldwork experience and be able to work in outdoor and variable weather conditions in both wooded and open environments. Projects are located in southern Maryland and in and around Tappahannock and Kilmarnock.  The project begins on or about May 1, 2024, and ends on or about August 15, 2024, with possibility of extension.

Qualifications: B.A. degree in history, anthropology, or related field and minimum three months archaeology field/laboratory experience; may substitute field/laboratory experience for up to one year of college work. Must have excellent organizational skills. Travel and overnight stays may be required; must possess a valid driver’s license; must be able to work in an outdoor environment, and able to lift approximately twenty-five (25) pounds. Any combination of acceptable education and experience, which has provided the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill the requirements of this position, may be considered. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
