Job Description

Job Summary:

In support of the mission and values of the Covenant Academies Foundation, the Covenant Hall HouseParent/Counselor is responsible for the development and management of all Covenant Hall operations. The HouseParent/Counselor lives onsite and oversees, coordinates, and manages Covenant Hall to provide a caring and well-structured atmosphere for those residing in the home. The Houseparent offers absolute respect and unconditional love to each student resident.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lives onsite and leads the home in a peaceful and nurturing manner while serving as role-model and guiding parent 

  • In collaboration with Muskegon Covenant Academy, meets the academic, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and academic development needs of students living in the home in accordance with individual student plans and the Covenant Academies Foundation program policies.

  • Develops a deep understanding of the Covenant Academies Foundation mission and understand the awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of homeless and the at-risk dropout youth

  • Works with the School Leader (or designee) to assist with all matters concerning the care, welfare and safety of the residents and property of Covenant Hall

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with the Covenant Hall residents/staff, and the staff of Muskegon Covenant Academy

  • Maintains a clean and safe condition of the hall and vehicles; reports maintenance needs/repairs; and schedules maintenance if necessary, with outside vendors

  • Develops healthy and financially responsible menus 

  • Coordinates meal plans for residents, assists with meal prep in collaboration with residents and develops a protocol for identifying and taking care of resident shopping needs; shops for groceries, cleaning supplies and personal care items

  • Is responsible for the safety requirements within the Hall, including facilitating monthly fire/safety drills and documentation; and maintaining up to date First Aid Kits and resident medications

  • Develops and maintains systems to facilitate communication, the delegation of duties, and the coordination of work within the home with student residents, according to the Covenant Academies Foundation principals and mission

  • Ensures regular in-house family meetings are occurring according to a set agenda.

  • Maintains resident Case Records and Profiles for every student living at the Hall.

  • Knows and follows the Covenant Academies Foundation program policies and procedures regarding the care and development of students.

  • Assures that all staff, contracted services and volunteers act in accordance with the policies and procedures.

  • Maintains positive relations with neighbors, community groups, schools, churches, local community officers, social services agencies and professional service providers.

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with medical, psychological, and other service providers in the community who can assist in ensuring positive relationships between the providers and Covenant Hall residents

  • All other tasks and/or duties as deemed necessary by the Muskegon Covenant Academy School Leader and/or the Covenant Academies Foundation 

Working Conditions This position is focused on the 24/7 operations of Covenant Hall and is responsible for serving in a parent-like role to create a caring and family-like environment at the Hall. Therefore, the Houseparent/ Counselor is required to live onsite (spouse/partner welcome*), at Covenant Hall and this position includes free room & board. Living arrangements include one bedroom/one bathroom suite, and shared living/kitchen areas with residents.

  • Monday-Friday, 3:00 PM-8:00 AM (with flexibility)

  • Saturday & Sunday, 24 hours a day

  • Standard sleeping time approx 11pm-6am, considered “on call” and required to be onsite

This position also requires basic housekeeping duties to maintain a home, such as cleaning, cooking and light repairs.

Exempt (no overtime)/Salary: $65,000 + benefits (3 non-consecutive weeks off)*

  • *Spouse/partner welcome as non-compensated resident; or,

  • *Spouse/partner welcome as compensated employee, would share job duties with both receiving a salary of $35,568 (if applying as a spouse/partner, please provide resumes/credentials for both individuals as expertise and knowledge would apply to both individuals)

Expertise/Knowledge

  • Be at least 21 years of age and have a background in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field with a minimum of a high school diploma

  • Possesses or be willing to obtain CPR, First Aid certification, medication administration certification, and safe food services certification.

  • Preferred: experience in residential setting 

  • Preferred: bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling or related field

  • Michigan Driver’s License required

  • Must pass background check (applies to spouse/partner as well)
