Position overview
Position title: CRES Pre-six Lecturer
Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $9,322 - $12,528 (based on salary points 5-15), please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay ).

Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.

Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring units instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in winter quarter 2024 through fall quarter 2024. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.

Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position Description

We seek professionally active and versatile teachers whose pedagogy is grounded in critical analysis of race and ethnicity and who are conversant with recent trends in ethnic studies. Candidates should be willing to develop syllabi which engage with racial capitalism and emphasize the intersection of race and ethnicity with categories such as gender, sexuality, class, disability, indigeneity, law, and citizenship. We are open to a range of proposed topics, which are not limited to courses that incorporate or focus on the following areas:

  • Comparative approaches to the study of race, ethnicity, and indigeneity
  • Critical adoption studies
  • Critical migration or comparative border studies
  • Critical prison studies
  • Critical science and technology studies
  • Disability studies
  • Environmental studies
  • Histories of decolonizing, anticolonial, race-radical social movements
  • Indigenous studies
  • Labor studies
  • Mixed-race studies
  • Queer studies
  • Settler colonial studies
  • Transgender studies
  • War and empire studies

We particularly welcome candidates whose courses are grounded in comparative, interdisciplinary, and/or transnational approaches. Additionally, we are especially interested in applicants with experience in indigenous studies or community organizing.


Lecturers should be willing to teach in both large lecture and smaller seminar class formats.

Qualifications



Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • B.A. (or equivalent foreign degree) in ethnic studies, feminist studies, American studies, history, literature, sociology, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years' teaching experience at the college or university level, or a record of three years community organizing experience.
