Job Description

A long-established and privately held real estate investment and management firm with a diverse portfolio of commercial properties across multiple states, including New Jersey, New York, Florida, and Connecticut. The company is known for its disciplined and long-term approach to property ownership and management, and is currently expanding its internal capabilities to support growth and operational excellence.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Director of Risk Management & Insurance to join the organization and take ownership of all matters related to property and operational insurance across the portfolio. This newly created role will work closely with leadership to assess risk exposure, structure and manage insurance programs, and ensure compliance across a broad and diversified set of commercial assets. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in insurance and risk management, particularly within the real estate sector, and will be capable of operating autonomously to develop internal best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the in-house expert on all insurance and risk management matters related to the company’s real estate holdings.

  • Evaluate and oversee insurance coverage across hundreds of properties, including but not limited to industrial, retail, office, and solar installations.

  • Provide strategic guidance on insurance decisions, such as when tenants request to modify or waive specific coverage requirements.

  • Coordinate with external insurance consultants and brokers, translating advice into practical and cost-effective internal strategies.

  • Monitor and ensure that all owned and leased properties maintain appropriate and up-to-date coverage, including verifying tenant insurance where applicable.

  • Advise on risk implications related to lease terms, new acquisitions, and development projects.

  • Maintain a strong understanding of state-specific insurance regulations, with an emphasis on New Jersey, while also providing insight into requirements in other markets as needed.

  • Proactively identify potential areas of exposure and propose measures to mitigate risk.

  • Track policy renewals, claims, and performance metrics, working closely with internal accounting and operations teams.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in insurance and/or risk management, ideally with a strong real estate focus.

  • Deep understanding of commercial property insurance, lease compliance, and risk analysis.

  • Familiarity with insurance considerations across multiple asset types (e.g., industrial, retail, solar).

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage a wide scope of responsibilities across a distributed portfolio.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal stakeholders and external advisors.

  • Experience navigating state-by-state insurance laws and policies, particularly in the Northeast region.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (Risk Management, Business, Finance, etc.) required; relevant certifications (e.g., ARM, CPCU) a plus.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience.
  • Potential for performance-based bonus.
  • Benefits package
