Position Description:

The Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa seeks candidates for the position of Director of the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Carver College of Medicine is among the top twenty-five public medical schools in National Institutes of Health funding and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is in its 25th year as an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Department of Internal Medicine is an integral part of UI Health Care which is a partnership between the College of Medicine and The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the United States and has close affiliation with the adjacent Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. With approximately 45 faculty, the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation has an exceptional record of achievement in research, patient care and teaching, as well as a distinguished record of national and international leadership. Multiple division faculty direct various NIH and VA funded research endeavors spanning bench to bedside. The division prides itself in participating in a program that is vigorous, friendly, and open to those who wish to seek answers to important clinical and biological problems.

The Director will partner with departmental, cancer center, and health system leadership to advance the success of the division, and in this capacity, represent the interests of the division and health system. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment, appointments and evaluations; managing educational, clinical and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and both short term and long-term strategic planning.

Education Requirement:



  • Candidates must have an MD or MD/PhD degree. This position requires completion of an ACGME-accredited Residency Program.

Required Qualifications:



  • A record consistent with appointment as an associate or full professor of internal medicine in either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest.


  • An outstanding record of accomplishments in teaching, research, and service.


  • An exceptional program in clinical or laboratory-based research.


  • Must have the demonstrated capacity to foster an environment in which excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship can flourish.


  • Must have experience and interest in developing and leading clinical programs.


  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspective. The successful candidates will have a national stature in academic internal medicine.


  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy interactions with trainees, staff and faculty.


  • Must have a record of innovative and effective administrative experience.


  • Must be eligible for licensure in Iowa.

Certifications:



  • Candidates must possess board certification in Hematology or Medical Oncology. 

Desirable Qualifications:



  • A competitively funded extramural research program.


  • Experience in an NCI-designated cancer center.


  • A track-record of mentorship of trainees and faculty.


  • Leadership experience in clinical research through NCTN, ECTCN, or institutional clinical research service.


  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers.


  • Experience in regional clinical operations including outreach and community providers.
