POSITION SUMMARY

The Education Specialist will work as part of the 4Roots Education team to design and facilitate educational programming for visitors on-site at the 4Roots Farm Campus, and off-site at schools and community partner farms/gardens. Part of their primary focus will be to create curricula and other educational materials to support 4Roots’ programs.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in science, agriculture, education, communication, or a related field, or 4 years of work experience in formal (classroom) or informal (farm, zoo, aquarium or nature center) learning or education.
  • Prior teaching experience with K-12 students.
  • Comfortable interacting with the public and engaging groups of adults and children of all ages.
  • Excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills, including presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver's license and access to reliable transportation.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Florida’s state standards and prior experience developing and leading informal outdoor education programs.
  • Gardening, farming, or related field experience.
  • Strong knowledge and/or interest in relevant food, agriculture and culinary topics.
  • Project management skills including attention to deadlines, details and organization.
  • Ability to multitask and redirect as needed.
  • Flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Strong work ethic, dedication and professional attitude.
  • Demonstrates passionate, friendly and enthusiastic behaviors.
  • Strong desire for personal growth and increased knowledge.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software programs.

POSITION FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Works a full-time Monday through Friday schedule, with some evening and weekend work required.
  • Develops and implements hands-on K-12 STEAM curricula and educational lessons and activities for field trips, workshops, camps, etc.
  • Helps coordinate and lead guided group tours, field trips, workshops, camp sessions, educational outreach presentations, and other activities for both children and adults.
  • Creates curricula and other educational materials for 4Roots’ programs.
  • Ensures all programs are kept up-to-date, developmentally appropriate, and align with Florida State Standards as needed.
  • Assists with creating content to coincide with curricula and educational programming, such as presentations, student worksheets, and impact evaluation assessments.
  • Engages with the community through informal farm tours and garden-based lessons, as well as formal educational speaking engagements and presentations.
  • Serves as a resource for teachers and community members.
  • Helps manage planting and maintenance of learning gardens as necessary.
  • Assists with 4Roots’ special events and outreach activities.
  • Helps train and supervise other education staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Builds and maintains professional relationships with community partners, guests, staff and volunteers.
