The Inverness Fire Protection District is currently accepting applications for the position of Firefighters/Paramedic. Testing is being conducted to fill one (1) open full-time Firefighter/Paramedic vacancy, and will also be used to establish an Eligibility List for future available positions.

Application Deadline: Friday, August 1, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. CST Must complete National Testing Network's FireTEAM exam, complete application (including PSSA and PHQ) AND upload required documents before this deadline.

effective January 1, 2025: $78,079 - $113,992 (5 years to top pay)
effective January 1, 2026: $80,422 - $117,412

Hiring Process:

Oral Examination:

The Board shall conduct pass/fail interviews prior to making an offer of employment.

The Board may examine or cause to be examined all or a portion of the candidates for positions in the District under its jurisdiction through an oral interview. If the Board determines that the District's hiring needs during the term of the eligibility register will not require all qualified applicants to be interviewed, then the Board may identify the number of applicants who will be invited to oral interviews. In such cases, the Board will select for interview only those candidates who rank the highest after successfully completing all prior phases of the testing process. Interviews shall be conducted according to a structured pattern established by the Board and shall measure criteria that the Board shall designate prior to the interview.

The Board may refuse to examine an applicant, or after examination, may refuse to certify a candidate as eligible, or may refuse to appoint as eligible:

A. Who is found lacking in any of the established bona fide occupational requirements for the position in the service for which the candidate applies;

B. Who is physically unable to perform the essential duties of the position to which the candidate seeks appointment;

C. Who uses intoxicating substances to the extent that performance may be diminished on the job, or who currently uses any nonprescription controlled substances or narcotics;

D. Who has been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude pursuant to 70 ILCS 705/16.06b(i)

E. Who has attempted to practice any deception or fraud in completing the application or examination process;

F. Whose character and employment references are unsatisfactory;

G. Who fails to fully complete the application or fails to comply with the requirements of the application or examination process in any respect;

H. Who tests positive for the existence of THC, cocaine and related drugs, and other illegal, non-prescription narcotics and drugs, under a sound drug testing procedure;

I. Who has been dismissed from any public service for good cause; or

J. For any other lawful reason, including any other reason set forth in 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1. & 70 ILCS 705/16.06b(i)

Any applicant, candidate, or eligible deemed to be disqualified shall be notified by the Board and may request reconsideration of such disqualification within ten (10) days from notification by written request filed with the Secretary of the Board. The request for reconsideration must set forth a basis for reconsideration and the Board may provide an opportunity to be heard to the extent as may be determined by the Board and pursuant to whatever procedures the Board may establish.

Preference Points:

Candidates who are eligible for preference points shall make a claim in writing using the form approved by the Board and provided by the Board or its agent(s), with proof thereof within ten (10) days after the date of the initial eligibility list or such claim shall be deemed waived. The Commissioners will prepare a "Final Eligibility Register" which shall include military, educational, academy, paramedic, or professional or paid-on-call experience preference points assigned pursuant to this section.
1. Military Preference Points

Applicants who served in the United States military actively for at least one (1) year and who were honorably discharged or are now on inactive or reserve duty shall receive five (5) points. Veterans and educational preference points shall not be cumulative.

- DD-214 (long form, including the character of discharge) is required as proof

2. Educational Preference Points

Applicants who have successfully obtained an associate's degree in the field of fire service or emergency medical services or a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university shall receive fire (5) points provided that the applicant has not received veteran preference points. An official transcript with a seal must be included with the request for preference points as proof of the attainment of a degree.

3. Academy Preference Points

Applicants who have successfully completed an approved full-time, 40 hours per week, fire academy (e.g. Arlington Heights Fire Academy, Elgin Fire Academy, NIPSTA Fire Academy, Romeoville Fire Academy, Southwest United Fire Districts Fire Academy, etc.) and earned their Firefighter II/Basic certification through the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) shall receive five (5) Preference Points. Applicants who have successfully completed an approved part-time, less than 40 hours per week, fire academy through a regionally accredited college (e.g. Harper Community College, Elgin Community College, etc.) and earned the following:

Firefighter II/Basic Operations certification through OSFM shall receive two and one-half (2.5) Preference Points.

- Copy of diploma or college transcripts from an approved academy AND a copy of Firefighter II/Basic Operations certification are required as proof

4. Paramedic Preference Points

Applicants who are currently a State of Illinois or National Licensed Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) shall receive five (5) Preference Points.

- Copy of the EMT-P license is required as proof

5. Experience Preference Points

1) Applicants who, on or after August 20, 1993, have been a paid-on-call certified firefighter II and/or paramedic of the District shall be awarded one-half (1/2) points for each year of successful service, up to a maximum of five (5) points at the time of initial hire. Any applicant who, on or after August 20, 1993, has been a paid-on-call certified firefighter III of the District shall be awarded one (1) point per year of successful service, up to a maximum of five (5) points at the time of initial hire.

- Copy of FF II/Paramedic/FF III certification is required as proof

2) Applicants from outside the District who were employed as full-time certified Firefighters II for at least two (2) years at another fire protection district or municipality shall have the same preference as District paid-on-call firefighters and shall be awarded one-half (1/2) point for each year up to a maximum of five (5) points. Applicants from outside the District who were employed as full-time certified Firefighters III for at least two (2) years at another fire protection district or municipality shall have the same preference as District paid-on-call firefighters and shall be awarded one (1) point per year to a maximum of five (5) points at the time of initial hire. No experience preference points will be awarded to applicants for service with a private employer who had a contract for fire or ambulance service with a fire protection district or municipality.

- Copy of FF II/ FF III certification required as proof

6. Limitations on Application of Preference Points

Applicants are allowed to claim a maximum of TWENTY (20) points. Preference points cannot be awarded without a formal claim form and supporting documentation.

No application of experience preference points may be allowed that will cause any candidate on the initial Eligibility List to pass over or be listed above a veteran. In the case of a tie between candidates immediately below a veteran, those tied shall be ranked according to the total they would have achieved if all experience points could have been awarded. Any remaining ties shall be broken by a lottery

Appointment from this Final Eligibility Register is subject to an oral interview, medical evaluation, and background investigation, which shall include fingerprinting. The Final Eligibility Register shall remain valid for two (2) years after which it will expire and the Board will strike off all remaining names. ((70 ILCS 705/16.07, 16.08 and 16.10; 65 ILCS 5/10-1.108 and 10-2.1-9)
