Shift: Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm, Evening and Weekends as needed
Status: Exempt
Reports to: Director of Food Safety & QA Sys
Wage Range: $74K - 99K

Food Safety Specialist
Work cross functionally to develop processes and procedures for Food Safety to maintain a safe food product. Work with resources related to food safety activities in the plant. The candidate must possess good knowledge of HACCP, Preventative Controls, Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), approved supplier programs, and sanitation programs including verification. Understands and communicates quality and food safety program information to appropriate areas. Possesses an ability to provide clear and constructive direction and conduct analytical assessments to support food safety processes and policies. Will work cross functionally with QA to provide backup supervision during QA Supervisor absences or vacancies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (other duties may be assigned as needed):
  1. Verify, validate, and revise HACCP Program and Preventative Controls Program for Value-Added Products.
  2. Maintain organization and accuracy of the organic program documentation.
  3. Verify and validate food safety processes against regulation and third-party audit standards.
  4. Assist with product quality research, plant trials for product improvement and new product launches.
  5. Verify plant activities operate in accordance with good manufacturing practices and follow federal and state regulatory policies.
  6. Identify food safety and process improvement ideas for process improvement project work.
  7. Participate in project work to improve or develop food safety or quality.
  8. Maintain food safety processes and procedures for evaluating and receiving food components, equipment, or processing aids from suppliers.
  9. Help as needed to investigate customer complaint issues. Identify work needed to find the root cause and develop corrective action with cross functional teams in a timely manner.
  10. Develop training programs for food safety and quality in cross functional areas including content, tracking and retention verification. Communicates food safety initiatives.
  11. Ensures that all documentation files related to food safety are kept up to date on each product and programs.
  12. Participate in project work as directed.
  13. Backup QA Supervisors on either first or second shift during vacations or vacancies as needed.
  14. Other assignments to be determined.
SAFETY/GMP/Misc (if applicable)
  • Maintain and work in accord with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration norms.
  • Adhere to GMP's in accordance with the company policy.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  1. Bachelor of Science Degree required; Food Science preferred.
  2. Minimum one-year experience in food manufacturing, preferably in fresh cut produce.
  3. Working knowledge of suite of Microsoft programs such as, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  1. Literate in English. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  2. Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents including SOPs, GMPs, policies and regulations.
  3. The candidate should be able to write legibly and communicate effectively to management.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  1. Ability to calculate proportions, percentages, and volume.
  2. Must be able to apply concepts algebra and statistics.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATION:
  1. Valid driver’s license.
  2. HACCP and PCQI certification preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Indirect supervision when filling in for first or second shift supervisors.
REASONING ABILITY:
  1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists is required.
  2. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  3. Must be able to organize time, schedule, and work on simultaneous projects.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  1. Monday – Friday with Saturdays as required, 40+ hours per week. Some second shift work required.
  2. Advanced to Intermediate level Microsoft Excel skills required.
  3. Working knowledge of Suite of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint required.

Position does require frequent travel and frequent weekend work. This position requires relocation to other plant site locations for specific periods of time.
