Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Staff Services Manager I, and under the immediate direction, control, and responsibility of an attorney, the Legal Assistant performs a wide variety of paralegal duties and other related work. The incumbent works as an assistant to attorneys and can properly be delegated the more routine paralegal duties by an attorney. The successful candidate will work both independently and as part of a legal team on sensitive and complex matters for the Commission. Working Conditions

This position provides hybrid telework opportunities, with employees required to work in-person at least two days per week. Beginning July 1, 2025, all employees may be required to work in-person at least four days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. Teleworking is only available for employees who reside in California. You must be relocated to California and provide your in-state address prior to your start date. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Ability to accurately read a statute or regulation and understand how the subdivisions of a citation relate to one another. - Ability to accurately interpret the less complex statutes and regulations. - Working knowledge of basic legal concepts, terminology, and procedures and the ability to apply this knowledge at an entry analytical level. - Knowledge of the use of legal reference materials, specifically the California Style Manual. - Knowledge of Westlaw. - Ability to reason logically; analyze situations accurately and recommend an effective course of action. - Ability to meet scheduled and last-minute deadlines. - Ability to work in a traditional office and virtual team environment. - Ability to communicate, problem-solve, and manage time effectively. - Ability to set forth a written statement of the facts, identification of the legal issues, application of the relevant law, and legally supported conclusion at the position's level of authority to do so. - Experience working with Attorneys. - Paralegal or law office training and experience. - Ability to work well with others at all levels.
