Why does the job exist?
Rotary Wing Pilots operate helicopters in support of Law Enforcement operations. This may include but is not limited to; surveillance, patrol, search and rescue, transportation of personnel and high-risk warrants and call-out operations.
How does it get done?
Plans and fly's missions for the New Mexico State Police, including search and rescue, Law Enforcement, and patrol, anywhere in the state. Assists the TAC Team with high-risk warrants and callouts, including transports of team members. Trains and maintains currency with other pilots and TFOs. Transports DPS personnel and VIPs as requested. Performs landing at various locations for PR events. Coordinates with New Mexico State Police management and supervisors on use of aviation assets. Performs daily inspections to ensure aircraft remain mission capable.
Maintains written and computerized flight logs and aircraft/pilot records to comply with FM regulations, federal guidelines and other applicable regulations.

Minimum Qualification
Associate's degree with a technical discipline or other aviation related degree. 1,500 hours of helicopter PIC flight time. FAA Commercial Pilots License with a helicopter rating and helicopter instrument rating and FAA Class II Medical Certificate. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required education.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.
In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.
Working Conditions
Working conditions for individual positions will vary based on the agency's utilization. Some desk/computer work will be performed in an office setting as well as flying to all parts of the State to perform assigned missions. Extended periods of sitting in aircraft as well as occasional overnight stays away from assigned duty location. Applicant must be able to lift 25 Ibs. All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate qualified individuals with disabilities.
