Job Title:  Industrial Designer Intern

Job Summary:

This position will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in industrial design and contribute to creating visually compelling designs for various projects. The individual will work under the guidance of experienced designers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and assist in producing digital and physical assets. This internship provides valuable exposure to the design industry and an opportunity to learn from industry professionals.

Key Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Industrial Design: Conceptualize, design, and develop hardware products focusing on aesthetics, ergonomics, and user experience. Create visually appealing and functional designs that align with the company's design language and brand identity. 
  • Design Research: Conduct user research, analyze market trends, and gather insights to inform design decisions. Understand user needs, behaviors, and preferences to create products that deliver exceptional user experiences. Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation in product design.
  • Sketching and Rendering: Create sketches, renderings, and visualizations to communicate design concepts and ideas. Use traditional and digital tools to convey the intended look and feel of the product. Iterate based on feedback from stakeholders and user research.
  • 3D Modeling and Prototyping: Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create 3D models of product designs. 
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, user experience designers, and product managers, to ensure design alignment and successful product development. Effectively communicate design concepts, ideas, and rationale to stakeholders. Present design proposals and recommendations to internal teams. 
  • User Testing and Iteration: Conduct user testing and gather feedback on design prototypes. Iterate based on user insights and usability testing results. Continuously refine and improve design concepts to achieve optimal user experiences.
  • Design Trends and Industry Knowledge: Stay informed about the latest design trends, materials, and manufacturing processes. Participate in industry events, conferences, and workshops to expand knowledge and expertise. Share insights and best practices with the design team.
  • Perform other related duties or specialized areas as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Required Skills/Abilities/Qualifications: 

  • Experience in industrial design, preferably in the technology industry.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating creative and innovative design solutions.
  • Strong sketching and visualization skills.
  • Fluency in 3D CAD surfacing and working with assemblies (Solidworks)
  • Fluency in high-quality photo-realistic rendering (Keyshot, Blender) 
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Advanced ability in rapid prototyping techniques, including making mock-ups, looks-like models, and building for 3D printing
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials.
  • Understanding of user-centered design principles and practices.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to balance aesthetic and functional considerations.

Education/Experience:

  • Recent graduate or currently enrolled in an accredited program pursuing a bachelor's degree in industrial design 
  • Class standing of a Junior or above

The pay range for this position is $25 - $33 per hour. Pay is dependent on the applicant's relevant experience.
