Organizer

Based in Chicago, IL

Cook County College Teachers Union, Local 1600 (AFT), is a progressive labor union representing 5,000 community college faculty, professionals, and staff at 14 community colleges in the Chicago area. We are a member-driven union, with elected rank and file leadership, dedicated to building a strong union to fight for our jobs, families and public education. .

The Organizer is responsible for recruiting new members at the colleges represented by Local 1600. The Organizer conducts workplace visits and follow-up, works with current member-leaders to create and/or support organizing teams at the chapters, and maintains records to facilitate assessment of contacts' attitudes towards membership and collective bargaining. The Organizer will also work on contract campaigns, external organizing drives, and other organizing efforts as assigned.

The Organizer must develop, schedule, and carry out plans with minimal supervision. He or she will receive direction from, and cooperate with, his or her immediate supervisor.

Criteria for Evaluation:

• Maintains good working relations with the executive board, chapter leaders, and members
• Carries out assigned responsibilities in a competent, professional manner
• Produces measurable results in membership growth and/or other campaign goals

Essential Duties:

• Manages member engagement campaigns and organizes activities at the colleges we represent
• Organizes and attends union actions and events, including evenings and weekends
• Attends staff meetings and trainings, sometimes on Saturdays or evenings
• Maintains member database
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• A strong commitment to social justice and union/community organizing
• Effective communication and record-keeping skills
• A reliable vehicle that can be used for work, a valid driver’s license, and current automobile insurance
• Union or community organizing experience
• Demonstrated ability to manage priorities
• Ability to exercise strong problem-solving skills

Salary and Benefits:

• $50,000 salary, flexible schedule, Individual health benefits covered by the union
