The Center for Climate Systems Research (CCSR) at Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist positon to calculate chemical processing of iron-bearing minerals during atmospheric transport of siol dust aerosols to the ocean. The researcher will introduce pools of total and soluble iron as atmospheric tracers in the NASA GISS ModelE, an Earth System Model that contributes to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. The iron-bearing aerosols are initialized using soil mineral composition retrieved from hyperspectrometer measurements aboard the International Space Station by the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Investigation (EMIT). The researcher will calculate the growth of the soluble iron fraction during atmospheric transport through chemical reactions within cloud and earosol droplets. The resulting ocean deposition of soluble iron will be used by oceanographers to calculate its impact upon ocean primary productivity and atmospheric CO2 for both the present and future scenarios. The researcher will present this work at professional meetings and through peer-reviewed publications, while contributing to broader team efforts. Candidates should have recently obtained or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or related field. Experience with aerosols, atmospheric chemistry and climate models is required as well. This appointment is full-time for two years and located at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) near the Columbia University Morningside campus. The estimated start date for this positon is July, 2024. The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled. Columbia University benefits are offered with this Officer of Research appointment. Salary range is $75,000 - $77,336. We accept online applications only. Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran Pay Transparency Disclosure The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
