Job Description

The Publishing and Authorship Librarian provides leadership, direction, consultation, and outreach in the areas of copyright, digital scholarship, publishing, and research data management, both within the library and broader UMD campus. This person leads our libraryâ™s efforts to promote open scholarship at UMD with collaboration and support from UMD library colleagues and from our Twin Cities University Libraries colleagues. 

The person in this position provides library liaison services to a set of research institutes and programs with needs for focused scholarly communications support. For these areas, this librarian provides specialized research support services, creates learning objects, and provides specialized outreach and workshop-based information literacy instruction. 

As part of the Research & Learning Team, this person will share responsibility for delivering information literacy instruction for courses within the College and Advanced Writing Program. The person in this position participates in Research & Learning Team meetings, activities, and projects; serves on teams and groups working on library-wide initiatives; and contributes to the library profession and/or campus. 

Assigned liaison subject areas: The Graduate School and UMD research institutes including Large Lakes Observatory, Natural Resources Research Institute, and Sea Grant.

The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $53,000 annually.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Scholarly Communications (50%)
  • Advocate for the libraryâ™s role in scholarly communications and communicate the value of open scholarship to the campus community through participation in relevant UMD and university committees and initiatives
  • Provide expertise, guidance, and consultation on publishing and copyright to library staff members and the UMD campus community, in collaboration with University Libraries colleagues on the Twin Cities campus
  • In partnership with library colleagues at UMD and the Twin Cities, coordinate library outreach and education efforts on copyright, publishing, open access, and research data management, encouraging and enabling campus researchers to manage their rights to their work, explore emerging modes of scholarship, assess and document the impact of their work, and improve access to published research
  • Develop, maintain, and share knowledge of copyright, digital scholarship, publishing, and research data management
  • As a member of the University of Minnesota system-wide library Open Scholarship Committee, participate in university system-wide efforts to promote open scholarship and share relevant information and updates with UMD colleagues
  • Facilitate ongoing learning among library staff members through training and discussion about scholarly communications issues, trends, and best practices
  • Consult with liaison librarians on information literacy instruction that addresses questions about information ownership and access, and encourages students to view themselves as contributors to scholarly conversations
  • In collaboration with the Information Literacy Librarian, identify and pursue opportunities to increase awareness and adoption of open pedagogy and open educational resources on campus
  • In collaboration with liaison librarians, provide consultation-level research support for systematic review authors at UMD
  • Coordinate campus participation in Experts@Minnesota, the University of Minnesotaâ™s tool for tracking research activity
  • Create and update research guides
  • In consultation with the Digitization and Metadata Specialist, foster relationships across campus to build awareness of and increase contributions to to the University Digital Conservancy, the University of Minnesota's institutional repository
  • In collaboration with University Libraries colleagues on the Twin Cities campus, coordinate publishing process for UMD journals and monographs

Liaison Assignments (20%)
For assigned departments: The Graduate School and UMD research institutes including Large Lakes Observatory, Natural Resources Research Institute, Sea Grant

  • As liaison to the Graduate School, participate in Graduate Student Orientation and provide outreach and instruction about publication and scholarship for graduate students
  • Provide in-depth research support in assigned subject areas
  • Develop good working relationships with faculty to support teaching and research
  • Keep current on academic trends and changes
  • Assess user needs to develop and maintain relevant, high quality services and information resources
  • Develop expertise in specialized information resources relevant to liaison areas 
  • Contribute to decision making about resource renewals and cancellations

General Responsibilities as a Member of the Research & Learning Team (20%)

  • Provide general research support to library users during scheduled hours
  • Provide foundational information literacy instruction to classes in College Writing and College in the Schools
  • Assist students and other researchers in evaluating resources and refining topics for research
  • Keep current on professional issues related to research help services
  • Share information on resources and research skills with colleagues
  • Document data on research transactions and instruction sessions
  • Serve as a member of the Research & Learning Team and participate in team meetings
  • Participate in team events and initiatives
  • Work cooperatively with library staff

Library-Related Professional Service and Engagement (10%)

  • Participate in library, UMD, and community meetings and events
  • Serve on campus or university committees
  • Engage in professional development
  • Contribute to the profession through organizational work, presenting papers, or publishing

Other Duties as Assigned

Required:

  • ALA-accredited Masterâ™s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience
  • Excellent organizational and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience building collaborative relationships with colleagues, library users, and/or community partners
  • Demonstrated understanding of current and emerging trends in scholarship and publishing
  • Demonstrated experience with proposing and/or implementing actions that improve equity and inclusion in your work

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience or coursework with copyright and intellectual property issues
  • Demonstrated experience producing and sharing scholarship or creative work
