Position Summary
The vision of the Responsible AI team is to advance fair housing by developing and implementing AI solutions that prioritize fairness, safety, security, and trust. Our mission is to proactively shape the future of AI in housing by fostering a responsible and equitable housing system. We strive to identify and mitigate the potential risks associated with AI development and deployment, ensuring that these technologies never compromise the principles of fair housing. Simultaneously, we champion the advancement of AI innovations that actively promote equitable access, opportunity, and outcomes for all, thereby contributing to a housing system free from discrimination and segregation. We are looking for an AI Governance Researcher to join the innovative, startup-like Research unit of our Responsible AI team and help advance our mission.

The AI Governance Researcher will contribute to the foundational research on AI governance at NFHA, focusing on the ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI in housing. Reporting to the Chief AI Officer , this role supports the development of research, reports, policy briefs, and advocacy efforts aimed at ensuring that AI technologies and initiatives are equitable and compliant with civil and human rights laws.  We want someone who is comfortable asking “why?” and comfortable working in an agile environment. Remote candidates will be considered for this position but must reside in the DMV area.

Essential Job Functions
Responsibilities Overview
  • Conduct foundational research and data analysis on AI governance topics relevant to NFHA’s mission and goals.
  • Support and participate in the development of reports, policy briefs, and other research outputs that inform NFHA’s advocacy and policy initiatives.
  • Assist in the implementation of AI governance frameworks within NFHA’s projects, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
Advocacy
  • Provide research data and analysis to support NFHA’s advocacy efforts related to AI governance in housing.
  • Assist in preparing materials for public comments, policy briefs, and other advocacy documents.
  • Represent NFHA in public forums to advance NFHA’s mission and work of the Responsible AI team.
Research
  • Conduct literature reviews, data collection, and basic research and analysis to support the organization’s AI governance research agenda.
  • Contribute to the development of research methodologies and the publication of findings under the guidance of senior researchers.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Support stakeholder communication by providing research findings, preparing presentation materials, and assisting in meetings.
  • Participate in internal and external discussions, offering insights from research to inform stakeholder engagements.
  • Help develop and maintain relationships with key partners and stakeholders including NFHA’s members.
Conference and Event Support
  • Assist in preparing research presentations and materials for conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  • Attend conferences and events to support NFHA’s AI governance initiatives and represent the organization’s research efforts.
  • Present on NFHA’s work and responsible AI principles and NFHA sponsored events as well as events sponsored by NFHA member organizations, government agencies, coalition partners, and industry groups.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required
Education: Master’s degree in social sciences with quantitative background or in a data science field with policy background. A bachelor’s degree with equivalent years of experience may be considered.

Experience: 1-3 years of experience in AI research, policy analysis, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree requires 3-5 years of experience.

Working Knowledge:
  • AI technologies and their impact on civil rights, particularly within the housing and financial sectors.
  • Basic understanding of AI governance frameworks and ethical considerations in AI development and deployment.
  • Federal and state regulations related to AI and data privacy, particularly those affecting housing and lending.
  • Research and analytic methodologies.
Skills:
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to conduct thorough literature reviews and data analysis.
  • Excellent writing skills for preparing reports, briefs, and other research outputs.
  • Ability to speak effectively before various audiences and convey important responsible AI principles and concepts.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Application Process
The salary range for this role is between $80,000 – $110,000.  Salary is commensurate with experience.
