CDL Driver – Role Overview

The Professional CDL Driver is responsible for safely operating a bus along designated routes in Duval, Clay, St. Johns, and Nassau counties. The driver follows time schedules, route charts, and special service requests while ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers. Duties may vary depending on the route, equipment, and passenger needs.

Essential Job Functions as a CDL Driver:

• Operate a bus safely and efficiently, adhering to all applicable regulations, traffic laws, and company policies.
• Provide exceptional customer service by offering clear, polite, and professional assistance to passengers.
• Strictly follow safety procedures and time schedules, ensuring smooth and timely operation of each route.
• Provide passengers with information on routes, schedules, fares, and general transit-related inquiries.
• Assist passengers who require special support or are disabled, including the operation of lifts and ramps for wheelchair access.
• Monitor fare collection, ensuring passengers use the appropriate tickets or passes.
• Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus.
• Complete necessary documentation for accidents, incidents, and mechanical issues, and respond appropriately in emergencies.
• Maintain communication with dispatch, supervisors, and emergency services via radio as needed.

Compliance:

• Adhere to ADA regulations regarding public transit services.
• Complete all required training and certifications as mandated.
• Follow all WHC policies, procedures, and directives.

Required Qualifications as a CDL Driver:

• Minimum age: 24 years.
• Valid Florida CDL Class A, B, or C license with Passenger endorsement.
• Clean driving record with no more than two traffic violations in the last 5 years or three years of a violation-free record.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior commercial driving experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Familiarity with Florida traffic laws and safe driving practices.
• Ability to follow directions and instructions from supervisors or dispatch via radio communication.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and clearly communicate via radio.
• Knowledge or ability to quickly learn public transit rules and regulations.
• Skill in operating passenger buses safely and efficiently.
• Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
• Strong problem-solving skills in emergency or challenging passenger situations.
• Ability to familiarize oneself with the city’s geography.
• Ability to assist passengers in a courteous and helpful manner.

Work Environment & Physical Demands as a CDL Driver:

• Flexibility in work schedule, including split shifts, split days off, and variable hours.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including exposure to fumes and vapors.
• Physical demands include lifting at least 25 pounds, pushing doors, windows, emergency hatches, and operating wheelchair lifts.
• Must be capable of bending, kneeling, squatting, and twisting.
• Ability to sit for extended periods while operating the bus.

Safety Requirements & Notifications as a CDL Driver:

• As a public transit provider, WHC follows Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines.
• Certain roles at WHC are classified as “Safety Sensitive” and subject to FL DOT and FTA regulations.
