The Teacher provides direct instruction and other educational services to hospitalized children and adolescents in order to help them maintain or improve their academic performance levels/standing and to help them make a smooth post-discharge transition back into their home school setting.

Qualifications

Licenses or Certifications :    Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.  Current Arkansas Special Education Teaching Certificate.   Completion of any required certifications for the Education Program as approved through the CEO, Current CPR and Handle with Care (HWC), or obtain within 3 weeks of hire.

Total education, vocational training and experience :   Minimum two (2) years experience in specialty and one (1) year experience in a mental health facility, preferred.  Documented experience working with children (ages 5-12), adolescents (ages 13-18).

SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  • Effective verbal and written skills needed to maintain intensive contact with patient’s home school counselors and teachers, and as appropriate school district personnel throughout the patient’s hospitalization, as well as post-discharge.
  • Working knowledge of psychiatric treatment modalities, including behavior management techniques.
  • General knowledge of state and federal laws governing Special Education – Approved School Programs.
  • Must be able to understand and respond to complex written and oral instructions.
  • Must possess skills necessary to respond quickly and calmly under stressful or emergency situations.
